If those men can do it, I can do it ~ Emma Gatewood
Last month, I received a lovely green bag to match my hand dyed yarn from Downtown Dye Works. The color is Hiker with Heart. My coaster with the crucial Bold Betty information was delayed by a month. The yarn is in honor of Emma or Grandma Gatewood. Grandma Gatewood was the first woman to hike the Appalachian trail. She was 67 at the time. I sure hope I have that much spunk when I’m her age. Here’s an article that provides more details. It looks like there’s a book and a documentary. I’m checking if my local library has a copy of Grandma Gatewood’s Walk. 
The yarn reminds me of hiking in the PNW. It’s a single ply superwash merino. So far, I’ve not been able to find the perfect pattern for this yarn. A coworker suggested mittens, but I haven’t found a good pattern. 
Burt is the most adventures, but even he doesn’t want to hike the Appalachian Trail. This was his response when I asked him.

QAGeek from Ravelry here. What’s the yarn like? If it’s squishy and wonderful, I suggest a terrific cowl like the Donner Pass or even the 2016 Peace Project. If it’s a workhorse, mittens or even a shawl might suit.
Burt would totally hike the pass, you should ask him again! (kidding) Kitties are more about the quick leaps.

Thanks for the suggestions. It’s a single ply so I’m not sure it’s going to be great for mittens, but that’s what I’ve got stuck in my head. I’m thinking about Convertible Mittens or Ridged for your Pleasure Mittens.
