Working from Home: Week 21 and 22

Everyone has his day, and some days last longer than others. ~ Winston Churchill

I missed a wfh post last week. Between the summer heat and my allergies, my creative juices weren’t quite up to par last week. The past two weeks, I’ve bought another tank of gas and had an oil change. In 2019, I wouldn’t have even noticed these type of activities needing to happen. Now, it just feels odd since we hardly ever go any place. I thought we had a pretty conservative approach to reopening after being shut down for weeks. (Didn’t it feel longer?) I felt I could safely shop locally wearing my mask, support local businesses and still be safe. As the numbers in this country continue to sky rocket, it is frustrating to see states just now adopting practices that the PNW has had in place for several weeks or longer. My work place has decided we will continue to work from home until January. It’s official, the British Hubby and I will be home together with the kitties for most of 2020. While I’ve been slowly stock piling washable masks, I did breathe a sigh of relief to know I’m not going to be exposing myself unnecessarily. On the flip side, I never thought I would be working from home this long nor that it could possibly go into 2021.

When all this began, I was sprouting all kinds of scraps from our kitchen. Well, this week I think our first celery plant died. Did I over water it or maybe it didn’t get enough sun? I have no idea. So far my only real kitchen scrap success is the onions that have survived so far.

I am pretty excited to see my lemon and rhubarb have survived another few weeks. These two I grew from seeds. I was so excited at the lemon tree’s progress, I sprouted three more seeds. These came in a package of 20 dwarf indoor lemon tree seeds. I certainly don’t need 20 trees (actually, we’re down to 19 as one died already.) I can’t stand in their way of fulfilling their lemon tree destiny. I’ll be giving these as gifts at some point.

My real success are the sunflowers. Next year, I hope to double the amount I planted this year. I should have enough seeds to make that dream come true! I’ve been sending my Midwestern parents photos of the blooms as they open. My parents are avid gardeners. My mom makes all her own pickles and salsa. I sent them a package of the Indian Blanket seeds last week. My dad quickly planted four seeds on Monday. They should have just enough time to bloom before the first frost. They had never seen such spectacular sunflower blooms before. With the wonders of modern shipping and the magic of eBay, it seemed a shame for my parents not to enjoy these blooms in their own Midwestern garden. Life is too short to not surround yourself with beauty.

So far, I have two solid yellow plants and at least four or five of the Indian Blanket variety. By the end of the week, the first Indian Blanket plant should have about five blooms open. I have seven plants so far that haven’t bloomed yet or I can’t figure out what color the blooms will be.

Watching my lemon tree grow, made me in the mood for lemon desserts. I tried Mini No-Bake Lemon Cheesecakes with a few changes from Easy Keto Desserts. I decided to make these in a big dish instead of individual servings. I didn’t quite have the crust to cheesecake ratio right, but they still tasted lovely.

Ernie Update: This evening he was able to have raw food again! Now all his favorite foods are back. And we’re going to try a new dental product for all the kitties. Wish us luck.

Keep safe, stay cool and wear a mask.

  1. I’m glad that you’re WFH for the foreseeable future. That’s the only way that I would work these days.

I’ll be curious to know how the kitties like the dental product. Moose is OK but Rascal has stinky cat breath, a sure sign of trouble if we’re not careful.

    • That’s great, Kath! I like that plan. Why set a timeline when we aren’t seeing positive results yet? I can also see myself wanting to wfh at least part time when I can safely return to work.

      • Yes! For a while they had been saying “we’ll try to get some people back in this summer if they want to” but quickly gave it up! And yea, I had already been planning to try and work from home 2-3 days a week in 2020 (I moved in the fall to a place with a longer commute) so I feel like now there’s a definite chance of that happening!

      • Agreed. That’s great if this helps with the long commute. We’ve lived places with lengthy commutes. I think many businesses were afraid workers would be less productive at home, but now we have proof that isn’t the case.
