The Community Shield

Some people think football [soccer] is a matter of life and death. I don’t like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. ~ Bill Shankly

Today is the first non-friendly match for Liverpool (LFC). It’s not the Premier League. That starts on Friday. It’s the 2019 FA Community Shield. (Okay, some people argue this is a glorified friendly match, but trophies are trophies, and I don’t think either team wants to lose this one.) The Community Shield is typically played between the previous season’s FA cup winner and Premier League winner. Last season, Manchester City won both so they’re playing the runner up of the Premier League, LFC.

With the time difference, it’s an early start in the PNW. Normally, I let myself wake up naturally on the weekends, but I’m eager for the season to get started.

I’ve got my new kit on.

I’ve brewed a pot of tea and warmed my LFC mugs.

My mimosa is ready for the first goal. I sure hope I didn’t pour it too soon. LFC is down 0-1 at half time. The second half was so stinking exciting. I was pacing instead of knitting, but can you expect anything less with a penalty finish? LFC lose 4-5 in the penalty shoot out. Sadness, but if this is anything to go by an exciting season is in store.

I’m nervously knitting with Ernie during the first half. I think he wants an LFC scarf for this season. Go Reds!
